Urgent fraud path
What to do first
The first few minutes matter. Move quickly, but only through channels you independently verify.
Evidence pack
Information to include
Keep a written timeline. It helps your bank, SAPS, insurer and any later ombud complaint understand what happened.
- Your account, card or profile affected, without sharing PINs or passwords.
- Date, time, amount and reference for each suspicious transaction.
- Caller numbers, email addresses, URLs, WhatsApp profiles and SMS sender IDs.
- Screenshots of messages, app prompts, payment screens and bank notifications.
- Bank reference number, SAPS CAS number and mobile-operator reference number.
- Any financial loss, attempted loss or blocked transaction.
Further escalation
When the bank case is not enough
Some matters need regulator, law-enforcement or independent dispute-resolution attention after the urgent bank response is underway.
Crime or stolen funds
Report to SAPS and keep the CAS number with your bank reference.
SIM-swap fraud
Report to your mobile operator and consider ICASA escalation if the provider complaint is unresolved.
Unresolved bank complaint
Escalate through the bank's complaints process first, then consider the National Financial Ombud Scheme.
