Prepare evidence

Information to include

Have the basics ready before calling or submitting a report. Keep copies for your bank, insurer, SAPS case file and any ICASA escalation.

  • Your mobile number or account number.
  • Date and time of the incident.
  • Suspected fraudster's phone number or email address.
  • Screenshots, SMS messages, WhatsApp messages or emails received.
  • Any financial loss suffered, including bank references.
  • Police case number, if applicable.

Escalation

When to involve authorities

Operator reporting is only one part of the response when a crime, consumer complaint or corporate governance issue is involved.

Crime or financial loss

Report the matter to SAPS. Ask for a CAS number and keep it with your operator and bank references.

Unresolved provider complaint

Contact the operator first and request a reference number. If unresolved, follow ICASA's consumer complaints process.

SIM-swap or porting fraud

Contact your operator and bank immediately. Escalate unresolved service-provider issues to ICASA where appropriate.

Corporate incidents

Preserve evidence, notify legal or compliance owners, and consider POPIA and incident-response reporting duties.
